When I do something that reduces my expenses, such as saving money , I don’t think about taxes. Especially if the item is not taxable. But …
But recently reader Stan sent a comment that made me consider it.
We Are Subjects
Most of us are subject to income taxes taxes. (Under current rules, if your annual income is less that $9,875, there is no Federal income tax.) Percentages of income tax currently range from 12% to 37%, depending on income.
Which means that if you spend $1.00 instead of saving it, you needed to earn anywhere from $1.14 to $1.59 to earn that $1.00 that you just spent.
Not Only That
This does not include any additional amount if the item has sales tax! In that case, the amount is even higher. Sales tax rates in the U.S. range from 0% to close to 10% when state and local taxes are considered,
Seen this way, it makes perfect sense to be astute about money. We need to earn much more than the cash we can have on hand to just be able to survive economically.

Other Ways to Deter Spending
Keeping tax rates in mind is a helpful way to consider the impact of spending. Another common way is to calculate how many hours of working it would take to pay for an item. This latter method, in my view, is most appropriate for bigger ticket items.

The statuette is probably a cult idol from the Vinça culture during the Neolithic Era, 4500-3500 BC. This era saw the development of farming and human technology. It is extraordinarily well preserved and derives from the settlement at Vinça in modern Serbia. This flourishing culture was the largest known in Europe at that time, extending along the Danube into the Balkans and Central Europe. Thousands of clay statuettes have been discovered in the region’s Vinça settlements suggestive of the intense magic-religious practices within the Vinça culture. This statuette is anthropomorphic, or human-shaped, and is presumed to have been used for ritual purposes.
