Some Garden Firsts

The seasons are on the move. Today we saw the first bud on the pear tree. The pear tree fruits in late summer into the fall, but it is nice to see some activity on the tree itself this early. In a few weeks, the tree will be full of white blossoms.

Some chayote squash in the kitchen started sprouting, so we planted one outside after moving a trellis for it. We put down pieces of bamboo which seems to dissuade squirrels and other unwanteds.

Today we transplanted some scarlet runner bean shoots from a flowerpot into the ground.

Also unexpectedly, one of the tree collard plants flowered and is also going to seed. Since tree collards are a perennial, it is rare for them to go to seed, and even rarer to flower.

We have had cold weather with occasional moments of warmth. Overnight and this morning we had much needed rain.

Spring is arriving.
