It’s still February, and cold. But the fruit trees are coming to life.
Yesterday, the temperature ranged from a low of 38°F to 59°F. With wind. But the plants are not deterred.
Yesterday we saw the first blossom of the year on our Peach tree. July is the month for heavy peach production, so we are five months away from fruit. The tree seems very old and predates us, so we don’t know its history. But we are grateful for it and its fruit.

Our unexpected plum tree. We suspect that a squirrel planted a seed, which is how we ended with this tree. Over a few years it has grown taller and seems the right size for action. We have had no fruit yet from this tree, last year we saw one or two blossoms for the first time, but no fruit. This year we are seeing several blossoms, so we may yet get plums. (Behind the plum blossom you can see the many branches on a pear tree. No blossoms yet on the pear tree.)

The center of our front yard is the home of the large fig tree. We planted it from a small cutting given to us about 15 years ago, and it has flourished and grown and fruited for many years. Green buds are now starting to push out of the branch ends. When figs finally come, the tree does not fruit all at once, but over the course of many weeks, making it easier to manage.

Not everything is a fruit tree. A few irises in the front are now showing their future blooms.

There are other plants doing their best. More weeks of winter weather await, but spring is not far behind.
